BUILDING A COMMON AFRICAN PASTORALIST AGENDA IN PREPARATION FOR IYRP.

Pastoralism is not just a livelihood; it is a centuries-old pillar of environmental stewardship, cultural heritage, and economic resilience across Africa. As custodians of vast rangelands, pastoralist communities safeguard biodiversity, protect critical livestock genetics, and enhance carbon storage, all while building peace and sustaining ecosystems that millions depend on.

Yet, these vital systems face unprecedented threats from climate change, land degradation, and exclusionary policies. The voices of those who have sustainably managed these landscapes for generations are often missing from the decisions that affect their future.

In a landmark moment, the United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP). Seizing this opportunity, pastoralist leaders, communities, and allies are coming together to build a unified African agenda.

This African Indigenous Pastoralists Gathering, to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from January 26-28, 2026, marks a critical step. It is a collective effort to amplify pastoralist voices, document indigenous knowledge, and forge powerful advocacy strategies. Our goal is to ensure that at IYRP 2026 and beyond, the world recognizes, values, and invests in pastoralism as a cornerstone of sustainable development and climate resilience.

Join us as we unite to shape a future where pastoralists are heard, their rights are protected, and their proven solutions lead the way for people and the planet.
